Day 4 happened a bit like this…

February 23rd, 2013 Leave A Comment »

Coffee, oats, morning stroll to Colin’s place to meet up with John Moline and his fiddle. My dear and talented friend Jeremiah Nelson stopped by with beer. Kellie came just to hang out and listen. We ordered pizza from Luce. All while John worked his ass off.  I think fiddle made it on 10 tunes. He played 6 hours straight then headed down to Palmers to play a show with the Front Porch Swing’n Liquor Pigs (a Friday night tradition).

Later that evening my partner Greg came over to listen as well. No martinis this time. I worked on my acoustic guitar parts while sipping on water. The second cup of water was to soak my finger tips in order to make my calluses soft and dampen the string squeak - a brilliant little tick brought to you by Evan Brubaker. As we say, “this is why he makes the medium bucks.”

Now, I think this is day 5 in the studio. I don’t know what day of the week it is. I saw kids at the coffeehouse this morning and wondered if they were all homeschooled - because of course it’s Friday and certainly their mom wouldn’t have taken them out of school just to get coffee and go sledding. (I figured it out - it’s Saturday)

Colin has been patiently waiting for this vary day. As I type he is laying down some sweet electric guitar lines. All I hear is the faint sound of the song (right now it’s “In My Bones”) in Colin’s headphones from across the room and Colin’s playing through a great tube amp. I cannot wait to hear the final product! You’d think - since I’m in the band I’d know what the record will sound like already but being in the studio shapes everyone’s playing a little differently. We’re polishing our parts and solidifying our work. This all feels good.

yeeee haw.

Day 3 in the studio

Blake Thomas woke me up with a phone call at 8:15a.m., “hey uh yeah, sorry, I’m here at your house already. I’m early.” Time to get my butt out of bed and make some coffee. Again, coffee in hand, we trudged over to Colin’s house and hit record at 9am. Blake plowed through 12 tunes on the tenor banjo! He was amazing.

1:30pm - My mom and grandma came and picked me up for a little lunch break at Matt’s. It had been so long since I had a Juicy Lucy. Damn!

Post lunch editing and guitar playing.

10pm - Our fortress was infiltrated by a good looking man with a mason jar full of martinis. He even brought fancy glasses and garnishes (thank you Greg my love).

We wrapped up at midnight or so. My hands and fingers are sore.

Day 4 is all about the fiddle. Introducing Mr. John Moline…
