One Night Gone

So we all want a story, of our ending hours
So much more beautiful than a thousand yellow flowers
Where I die with my secrets and you with yours

We made love for reasons that are still hard to find
Never even mourning what I might leave behind
I just watched a new hand glide across her thigh

It was just one night gone
One night too long

Not one more kiss after it was all said and done
On that long drive home I sang along
Sweet voices carried about love going strong

It was just one night gone
One night too long
She wants the details and my best apology
Just maybe, she shouldn’t have said a thing
It was just one night gone

I could taste the lie upon her lips she can’t hide nothing from me
It crept into our bedroom, like kudzu on a tree
She asked for my secret and a gift bag of sorries

It was just one night gone
One night too long
I said save me the details and your best apology
Just maybe, you shouldn’t have said a thing

Put that one night in a pillow case
Shake it til it suffocates
Can we tie that dead thing down to the moon
and maybe, then maybe
We can love like we used to, love like we used to, love like we used to —-

One night gone
Just one night gone
